Registering For The LSAT

You’ve thought it through and you’re ready to embark on the law school journey. First things first, register for the LSAT. This is the standardized test that most law schools use to help determine your admittance into their program. This can be a make or break test so do some research before you sign up.

The LSAT is available four times a year. Check with the Law School Admission Council to see available test dates. The tests are usually scheduled in February, June, October and December. Test dates usually fall on Saturdays but there are other dates available if you are unable to attend on Saturdays due to the observance of the Sabbath.

Many students register for the October LSAT dates. Think about registering early and taking the LSAT in June if you’re ready. This will give you time to take the test again if you need to cancel your score due to sickness or emergency or if you want to retake the test.

To Register
You can register for the LSAT online, by phone or by mail. If possible, opt to register online. Registering online through the LSAC web site allows you to see the test center locations in real time. There’s nothing worse than choosing your test center then finding out it’s been filled and have plan to drive to a test center three hours away. Register online, its quicker and easier.

Another benefit to registering online is that you will get your LSAT scores faster. You’ll receive your score through email about three weeks after your test date.

You can also receive your score by phone using the TelScore service. You will need a pin number, Social Security Number, Law Services ID number and a credit card for the $10 charge.

Paper copies of your score are no longer mailed to you. If you would like a paper notification of your score you must contact LSAC and pay a $25 fee.

General Fees
You must pay $118 to take the LSAT. Late registrations require an extra $60. To change a test center or change a test date is $31.

If you are unable to make it to a published test center then you may have to inquire about non-published test centers. Non-published test centers in the U.S. and abroad have different fees.

What Is The LSDAS?
The Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) is a service that centralizes all your application information. Most ABA-approved schools require that you sign up for this service.

Once your application is received by a law school, they will request a report from the LSDAS. The LSDAS will have a summary of your undergraduate academic studies, copies of all your transcripts, your LSAT score, your LSAT writing sample and copies of your letters of recommendation.

Be sure to sign up for the service at least six weeks before applying to law schools so that you are able to submit all required information. The fee for the LSDAS is $109 and registration can be done online or by mail. Check with your school if they require you to sign up. If you are applying to law schools in Canada, the LSDAS is not necessary.
